Frequently Asked Questions
The Little Cake Box is a home bakery in Canterbury (Kent). We are registered with Canterbury City Council Environmental Health Department and have been awarded the top 5 star hygiene rating. We also hold a Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate and have public liability insurance. Visits to our home bakery are by appointment only and the address will be given to you when you collect your cake.
All celebration cake orders require a £15 non-refundable deposit to secure the date. The remaining balance is payable a week before collection or delivery. For orders with less than 1 weeks notice payment is required in full. For all wedding orders a £100 non-refundable deposit books your cake and the balance is payable a month before your wedding. A date is only secured for you with a deposit (an enquiry alone doesn't guarantee a date for you). Please see our full terms and conditions.
We advise booking your cake with plenty of notice as we are often booked up several weeks, if not months, in advance. For wedding cakes we recommend getting in touch at least 12 months beforehand, sometimes earlier if it's during the peak summer months between April-September. We try to accommodate last minute requests if our schedule allows. Please get in touch to find out our availability for your particular date.
Please let us know when placing an order if any of your guests have special dietary requirements or allergies. Some cakes can be made without nuts, gluten and alcohol but please be aware that all of our cakes are prepared in a kitchen that uses all of these ingredients. Therefore, we are unable to guarantee our cakes are completely “free from” these ingredients due to the risk of cross contamination. Whilst we take every possible precaution to minimise the risks, we don't recommend eating our cakes if you have a severe allergy. Unfortunately we are unable to make vegan, egg-free, dairy-free or sugar-free cakes. All our cakes are suitable for vegetarians.
We provide a delivery service for celebration cakes within Canterbury for a flat rate of £5. Please note that delivery is subject to availability and will depend on workload that week.
For wedding cakes we deliver at no extra charge for venues within a 10 mile radius of our home bakery (minimum order value will apply). Venues more than 10 miles are charged on a per mile basis and this will be included in your quote when you make an enquiry. There may also be an additional charge for our time if your venue is particularly far.
Your cake is baked as close to your order date as possible to ensure it is fresh for your wedding/event. We cannot guarantee it’s quality if it is consumed more than 48 hours after the event. Our cakes are made entirely of natural ingredients and it is for this reason they will not have the extended shelf life of most supermarket cakes which contain additives and preservatives. In order to keep your cake in optimum condition it must be stored out of sunlight and at room temperature. Once cut, it should be wrapped well in cling film. Cakes should not be refrigerated as it will dry out the sponge inside and the decoration/covering can spoil due to the moisture in a refrigerator. Although you can freeze cake slices for up to 3 months, we cannot guarantee the quality of the cake after defrosting.
If you are collecting your cake we recommend you transport it in an empty boot or the footwell of your car. We advise against putting tiered cakes on seats as they are more likely to tip or slip due to the tilted nature. If it's a hot day it's a good idea to use your air conditioning.
Cake stands are available to hire (for weddings only) for a small charge plus a refundable deposit. All stands need to be returned back to us within 3 working days of your wedding (we don't collect them from the venue). The deposit will be refunded back to you via bank transfer once we receive the stand in the same condition. Any damage or loss will result in the deposit being retained.
A non-cake tier may be introduced to add scale and drama to a design. Any false tiers incorporated into your design will be decorated in the same manner as the remainder of the cake. Please bear in mind that adding a 'dummy' tier will not substantially reduce the price of the overall cake as the time taken to decorate needs to be factored in.
Absolutely! We encourage different flavours of cake to offer guests a choice. There is no additional charge for selecting multiple flavours. If you choose fruit cake this will need to be on the bottom tier due to the weight (extra charges apply to fruit cake only).
Fresh flowers dress a cake beautifully and look amazing. We don't supply the flowers for wedding cakes but we are very happy to liaise with your florist or have some great contacts if you don't have one arranged already. Some flowers are toxic and cannot be put on cakes but your florist will be able to advise you. Sugar flowers are a wonderful alternative and can be kept as a memento of your special day.
For wedding deliveries we have a minimum order value due to the time required for setting up and travel. On some occasions, if your cake needs to be smaller, there may be the option of collection depending on the type of design. Please get in touch for more information.
We are happy to advise you on the best type of cake to have for your wedding depending on the time of year you are marrying.
Fondant iced cakes are usually the most stable option to have in the summer and will withstand heat much better than other types. We strongly advise against having a tiered buttercream cake in the summer months due to the potential risks with warm weather (especially if your venue isn't well air-conditioned or is in a hot marquee).
Please note that all types of cakes must NOT be refrigerated. This will result in the sponge inside drying out and any sugar flowers or fondant will become deformed due to condensation.
We always advise you have your wedding cake delivered and set-up by us at the venue so you can be sure that everything is in perfect condition. On some occasions it may be possible to collect your cake but we usually recommend this is not more than 2 tiers. Some cakes are not suitable for transporting fully stacked (naked, semi-naked and buttercream). We would usually delivery cakes boxed up in separate tiers for safety, assemble them at the venue and then add any decoration.
Fondant iced cakes are a safer option for transporting stacked but some decoration, such as sugar flowers, may be very fragile. In the event you do collect we will do everything to ensure the cake is stable and boxed up well. However, we cannot be held responsible for any damages if you do choose to transport the cake yourself.
